Chinese Traditional Music

Introduction:
The Zheng, commonly known as Guzheng, (pronounced "Goo-Jeng"), is a plucked string instrument that is part of the zither family. It is one of the most ancient Chinese musical instruments, and is mentioned in documents written in the Qin dynasty (before 206 BC). Zheng is the forerunner of Japanese koto, Korean kayagum, Mongolian yatag, and Vietnamese dan tranh. The "Gu" in Guzheng, also reflects the instruments long history, as its meaning in Chinese is "ancient."

Guzheng has been a popular instrument throughout history and can be found in both an ensemble of Chinese instruments and as a solo instrument of Chinese traditional music. Since the mid-19th century, Guzheng solo repertoires have been growing and evolving towards a higher technical complexity.

Sessions:
A one session elective course will cover the basics of the Guzheng and Guzheng appreciation. We can also arrange group and private courses for students outside of the standard elective class. The course duration and fee's will depend on the level the student wishes to attain.
