Business Chinese

CLE Business Chinese language courses are available to students at Intermediate, Advanced and Proficient Mandarin Chinese levels (or a minimum of 6 months Chinese language experience). Business Chinese language programs are designed to provide students with the necessary oral and written skills to conduct business in a Chinese language environment. All programs are comprehensive, meaning that students will learn to read, write, speak, and listen to Chinese, while gaining essential cultural understanding. Emphasis is placed on the contemporary usage of business language and related business culture.

  • Business Chinese Course Materials: Business Chinese language students use a Business Chinese text book series for core language classes. Additionally, language teachers will incorporate business contracts, business periodicals, government policies, news releases, and business writing into class sessions.

  • Business Skill Development: Students will develop the following business language skills -
    • Basic Chinese language skills that are applicable to commercial activities or interest.
    • The ability to understand the basics of the Chinese economic environment, as well as, rules for business performance, trade, investment, cooperation and management of enterprises.
    • Competence for cross-cultural communication in the context of economic and cooperative interchange. This includes a wide range of knowledge regarding business customs, and historical information regarding Chinese Culture.

  • Cultural and Social Skills:
    • Ability to use appropriate expressions during business and social occasions. Examples include: greeting, introduction, apology and congratulation.
    • Ability to use appropriate expressions for traveling, networking, telephoning and appointment making.
    • Ability to use appropriate expressions for commercial activities, such as giving a brief account of a company or product.
    • Ability to use appropriate expressions in consulting, negotiating, bargaining, writing or revising a plan, analyzing and resolving problems, and effectively commenting or adding suggestions to a specific subject or project.

  • Business Chinese Class Levels: CLE small group business classes (typically 2-6 students) provide an interactive and engaging learning environment. All students begin classes with other students at the same or similar Chinese proficiency level. Placement test are given prior to beginning a course program to ensure proper placement. CLE then constantly evaluates student progress and may periodically move students to the best available class for their rate of progress and proficiency level. Business Chinese class levels are divided as follows:

BC1 (1500-2000 words)
BC2 (2000-2500 words)

Intermediate level students are required to know at least 1500 Chinese words. These students are able to construct basic paragraphs.

BD1 (2000-3000 words)
BD2 (3000-3500 words)


Advanced level students are required to know at least 2000 Chinese words. These students can express their opinions with good intonation.

BE1 (3500+ words)

Proficient level students are required to know at least 3500 Chinese words. These students are able to read from newspapers and magazines, understand radio and television broadcasts, conduct business and can express themselves systematically using appropriate expressions and language norms.

  • Business Chinese Class Schedules: CLE has many scheduling options, offering students a great deal of flexibility to choose the right program, class time, and duration to reach their individual Chinese language goals. CLE small group Business Chinese classes are generally available with the following schedule:

1. Weekday Classes:
M-F 8:30-12:30 or 14:00-18:00 (20h/week) or M-F 8:30-12:30 and 14:00-16:00* (24h/week)
with optional tutoring

*Semester and Academic Year courses have up to an additional 4 hours (optional) of afternoon tutoring class each week. Intensive courses have an additional 2 hours of afternoon class each day M-F.

2. Evening Classes:
M-F 18:30-20:30 (10h/w)

3. Weekend Classes (Sat & Sun):
10:00-12:00 or 13:00-15:00 (4h/week) or 10:00-12:00 and 13:00-15:00 (8h/week)
